Can't connect to my Brother printer from Mac over wireless network

Problem

Bought a new Brother MFC-J475DW multi-function printer / scanner / fax but could not add it as a printer in the Print & Scan dialog in System Preferences on my Mac. When I clicked the "+" button no devices were displayed.

Confirmed that the printer was connected to the wireless network by pinging its IP address as well as browsing to it's system home page.

Facts

  • Brother MFC-J475DW
  • iMac OS X Lion (10.7.5)
  • Asus RT-N56U Router (Firmware version:3.0.0.4.374_239)

Root Cause

Bonjour communication was not working over the wireless network.

Solution

In the Asus router settings you need to enable IGMP Snooping:

Wireless (left hand panel-->Professional (tab)-->Enable IGMP Snooping (in the middle of page)
